Andi Benet

Andi Benet [they|them] is a lens-based artist working in San Francisco. As an artist, their practice explores perception, identity, and the interplay between them.

From a mixture of hypersensitivity, migraine aura, and synesthesia, their perception of reality is abnormal, ranging from hue shifts to double vision to hallucinations. They recreate this sensation—seeing and not believing—by distorting captured images via the use of supersaturated lighting, prisms, unusual film stocks, and multiple and long exposures.

Disabled, assigned female, and queer, they use their own body as a tool in performative self-portraiture, as a means to reassert bodily autonomy.  Questions of æsthetic as identity-marker draw them to create work featuring dreamlike, unreal archetypes.
