Heather Harvey
I am an American artist living on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I work across traditional genres including painting, drawing, sculpture, and site-specific installation, as well as post-studio and ephemeral practices. These often involve walking as a method of research and collecting—gathering trash, plants, debris, and other found materials as a way of thinking through place, time, and other experiences.
My projects are rooted in psychoanalytic and Jungian perspectives and often combine contemplative mysticism with ethics-based social justice concerns. I draw on a wide range of influences including science (astronomy, physics, biology, and geology), philosophy and poetry, and subjective complexities of everyday life.
I have recently been awarded residencies at the NARS Foundation in Brooklyn, NY; Cultivate’s La Baldi Residency in Montegiovi, Italy; the Buinho Creative Hub in Messejana, Portugal; and a fellowship residency at the Vermont Studio Center. Recent solo exhibitions include the Academy Art Museum in Easton, Maryland; the University Gallery at Salisbury University, MD; Maryland Art Place in Baltimore, MD; and Second Street Gallery in Charlottesville, VA. I hold an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and am an Associate Professor of Art at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland.
